Gruff and Fluff
By Lee Lawton
Okay, so I went away on vacation during the Democratic convention. I knew Hillary was history, so why not? I was actually eating a “world famous” hot dog outside the Langlois, Oregon grocery, when I heard that Joe Biden got Obama’s nod. Before I could even process the Democratic VP pick, let alone the hot dog, Mrs. Palin had blazed onto TV screens everywhere. Oh my, as much as I hate to admit it, I have been struck dumb - totally dumb. And, by the way, friends and foes, dumb does not mean stupid!
Immediately upon seeing Mrs. Palin, Gruff and Fluff came to mind. McCain as Gruff and Mrs. Palin as Fluff, of course, but this is before I find that Mrs. Palin can kill a moose with one hand while holding any number of children in the other, and finding some other way of honoring her wifely duties at the same time. This is Alaska, after all. So, now I have to say that it appears that it is McCain who is Fluff and Mrs. Palin who is Gruff (in a very nice way, of course, just as she has been taught by the anti-feminist league of Alaska).

Don’t Bask, Don’t Swell
By Lee Lawton
Gays and lesbians in the military are waiting with bated breath for the day when a Democrat steps into the Oval Office and signs away Bill Clinton’s “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” (DADT) policy. The gay and lesbian community seems to feel that they will be coming up in the world, should they be allowed to serve in the military as out queers. Sure about that?
Let’s cast our minds back to World War II. Blacks weren’t integrated into the U.S. military until 1948, after the war was over, although there were separate African-American units in WWII, as well as in other wars. This comparison reminds me of the old joke, “Is it easier to be Black or gay?” The answer is that it is easier to be Black, since you don’t have to come out to your parents. African-Americans didn’t have the “opportunity” for a DADT policy, for obvious reasons.

If You Want Obama To Win, You’ll Vote for McCain in 2008 By Lee Lawton It is a crazy world isn’t it? Everyone seems to accuse someone else of doing what they, themselves are doing. Like McCain accusing Obama of “being out of touch.” Nice touch, John. And, based on all the CEOs who’ve gone down in the last few years, you know for sure that if anyone is accusing someone else of stealing, well… I’m coming out right now and telling you that I haven’t been a Republican since Goldwater ran for president, and I was too young to vote then. The fact that I was alive in 1964 certainly ages me, but now that I’m telling you that I’m left of Democrat, and possibly even left of Socialist, you may truly wonder why I’m suggesting that if you are like me, or even slightly to the right of me, that you vote for John McCain for president.

My job is to assist God's creatures
I was born with the need to fulfill their needs
I take in new family members without plan, thought or selection.
I have bought dog food with my last dime
I have patted a mangy head with my bare hand
I have hugged someone vicious and afraid
I have fallen in love a thousand times
And I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body.
I have animal friends and friends who have animal friends
I don't often use the word "pet."
I notice those lost on the roadside
And my heart aches.
I will hand raise a field mouse
and make friends with a vulture.
I know of no creature unworthy of my time.
I want to live forever if there are no animals in Heaven
but I believe there are.
